travel across country with cat, dogs and bird?

Heather W asked:

I pass from California to Florida …. How can you travel with 2 small dogs (cocker and Chinese crested) A cat and a cockatail? we have 3 cars going … …. My cat ALWAYS ALWAYS impulses in your drawer … The cocker is a mad dog. (6months) the ridge with no problems (she travels large) The bird is 15 years … (not sure how he will travel) Suggestions … beyond the norm of the rules of the drawer, hotels and stops negligible. What can be done to help with stress? Google and I read this question and some answers … but I want to hear from people who have done this successfully.

    Our Chinese Cresteds

Although the distances are not the same, I used to travel with two dogs, two cats and two cockateils from London to Northumberland regularly.

You might find there isn’t much stress involved – they’re so adaptable!

My cats were quite happy in their carrier – I let them have the run of the car when I had a rest stop. The dogs were easy – I just played ball with them til they were tired at the rest stops – then they just slept the rest of the way! The birds seemed to enjoy looking out of the window – i had to make sure their cage was very secure, and I covered them with a blanket at night.

Hope that helps. If the dogs were to get car sick it may be a problem – your vet can maybe give you tablets. And I found that in the beginning, the cats sicked up when I first set off – but they got used to it. Maybe a few short trial runs would be helpful?
