Hi! First of all, please check your “contact solution” and make sure it is only saline solution, not a cleaning or rinsing solution — those could contain harmful ingredients for your dog. Then, I would strongly advise that you take her to a vet to evaluate the eye. She may have a bacterial infection or a scratched cornea, both of which can be very painful and will not clear up rapidly with just at home treatment.

I would start by getting rid of the flush. You can go to any pet store and pick up something called “Terramycin” (terr-a-mice-in). It is an eye ointment that comes in a small tube, and costs about $8. It is used for eye infections. Follow the directions and apply that, and give it about 3 days to work. If her eye isn’t getting any better, then take her to the vet, and as the person above said, they will examine her to make sure her eye doesn’t have a scratched cornea. If it is just a minor infection, the terramycin will clear it up.

The first thing to do is to take her straight to the vet for a full vet exam. It’s not good to attempt to treat the eye yourself. Due to her past, it is best to rule out any infection, which sounds like she has her in eyes. For the time being, if anything, you could use polysporin drops. I am so glad you have rescued her for the terrible place she came from. A vet check is a must. Plus she needs her vaccinations and should be heartworm tested.

it is most likely Dry Eye.. which is a common problem in the breed, expecially in dogs that come from puppy mills and back yard breeders. It is a lack of tear production. She needs to see a vet. A simple test can be done to check for dry eye. Im not sure if I would use contact solution on the eye, you could make things worse.

The test for dry eye is ver inexpensive, and does not cause the dog any pain. I had the vet check my Crested for Dry eye a few years ago when he had mucousy eyes. The vet has special paper test strips that are placed on the eye.. they measure how many tears the dog produces.

Surgury is sometimes an option for dry eye, but is not always successful. Surgury may consist of unblocking/opening the tear ducts.. or, somehow running the tear ducts off the salivary glands.

The vet will prescribe medications to help keep the eye moisturized.

Its possible that it could be an infection, irritation, allergies, etc.. but Dry Eye is my first guess.

For the dry skin, try curel ultra healing, olay quench, or eucerin. You will want to exfoliate any dry or dead skin off first.. a sugar or salt scrub will work nicely.. I like the salt scrubs at walmart. Bath with a moisturizing shampoo. Then apply lotion. If she likes to cuddle under a towel, you can also generously put olive oil on her skin right after a bath and wrap her in the towel for about 10 mins and let the skin absorb it.
